Everyone always talks about October in relation to magic due to the folklore around Samhain, however for me, September is where the magic is!!
There is a particular kind of magic in September, it arrives quietly amongst the final chaotic days of summer.
The nights draw in. The mornings feel different. Summer starts to loosen its grip and we become aware that the year is moving towards the darker half.
The other morning as I sat sipping my coffee and my thoughts went to this blog and why I hadn't started it earlier in the year as planned. Without realising it, I began to think:
"It's too late now"
"I'll start it in January"
"I'll do it next year"
"There is always next year"
And then I stopped myself. There is still four months of the traditional calendar. There are weeks before The Wheel turns to Samhain and even longer until it turns to Yule.
In this moment I realised that there is still time and more importantly, there is still possibility. For too many years, like many people, I have lost track of the year and before I knew it, another year had slipped through my fingers.
We have somehow become accustomed to treating January as the only legitimate beginning and we often get to this time of year and we start to defer our goals to the forthcoming "new year" under the banner of new year, new plan, new version of ourselves.
But The Wheel offers many beginnings and September is one of them.
Unlock your magic
Perhaps this is why it can feel so full of energy. The air carries a sense of return, of gathering ourselves and our thoughts, of getting clear about what to release and what matters.
This is where I think magic becomes something wonderfully practical. Forget the folklore and the stories about magic being about spells or wishing for something into existence.
For me, magic is intention. It is deciding that something matters to you and then beginning to give it attention. It's about taking the dream that has been living quietly in your head (like this blog has in mine for about three years) and giving it a place in your day:
Make that phone call
Design that logo
Write that first article
Start that charity
Have that conversation
Apply for that funding
Intention without action remains a wish.
And the most magical thing about all of this is realising that you don't have to wait for the perfect moment, you have today and that is all that matters.
So what is it you have been telling yourself it's too late to start?
What dream have you quietly filed away as "one day"?
What would happen if, instead of waiting for January to return, you decided to use this moment, this season to actually unlock your ambition and go for it?
Remember, four months is a long time, a lot can change in that time. A goal can be reached, a habit established, a project can be started and a dream can easily become a plan.
The Wheel is not telling you to hurry, it is just reminding you that time is moving and we get to decide what we do with it.
So today, unlock your magic, choose something that you want to bring into being and name it. Give it your intention and take one small, tangible step towards it.
Not tomorrow. No January. Today.
Practical Magic - a gentle practice for today.
Choose one thing that you want to achieve before Yule. It doesn't have to be a massive project (unless that is what you want to achieve).
Write it down in your journal or in your Notes App as though it was already possible.
Then ask yourself:
What is the one thing that I can do today to moves me towards this?
Make that step specific and small:
If you want to become a writer, write your first 100 words
If you want to start a course, find out how to sign up
If you need to have an important conversation, send a message booking it time to chat
Choose one action you can complete today and do it before the day ends and then tomorrow take another step.
Let intention become action and then that action will become momentum.
The Wheel is reminding you that there is still time.
And The Wheel turns. And we turn with it.
