“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.” - Jim Bishop

As we start a new week, step outside and look closely at the signs of change, or as Jim Bishop refers to it, gold. The leaves are starting to turn and the hedgerows are still glistening with ripened berries... look out for blackberries and elderberries. Now the mornings are cooler, look out for morning dew on the webs of the busy spiders and check out the crops of fungi popping up on lawns or under trees.
In the skies our summer visitors, swallows and swifts, are setting off on their travels and other birds start to arrive back after being away for the summer months.
We are reminded that September is not the end of summer, remember The Wheel turns slowly, and nature doesn't transform the seasons overnight. We are at the threshold, with summer still around and autumn quietly making itself known.
This week, don't rush towards autumn, resist the commercial pull to welcome in Ber Season. Instead, embrace change and notice where nature is at. As The Wheel turns slowly, pay attention to what is leaving, what is arriving and what is ripening?
Maybe there is a lesson here for our lives too? Let's not fear change.
Practical Magic - a gentle practice for today.
Today, go outside and look for the gold that late summer carries. Maybe step into your garden or maybe visit a park or go for a walk in nature and then using your Notes App make a note of the following:
- One thing leaving - maybe the swallow or swifts or the acorns falling from their cups
- One thing arriving - maybe the arrival of fungi or dewy mornings
- One thing ripening - maybe rosehips in the garden or blackberries in the hedgerow
